Work completed during my sojourn in Nauru, Oceania. For more than two decades of record prosperity enabled by ruthless extractivism, the islanders quickly became accustomed to a rentier lifestyle, made up of idleness, fast food and expensive cars. A young local man told me his parents at the time owned five cars…one for each day of the week. When a car broke down it was abandoned on the spot to be immediately replaced by a new one freshly imported. The micro-state is still today dotted with these wrecks eaten away by rust as well as numerous abandoned gas stations that punctuate the single road encircling the island. Twenty-six wrecked cars and gasoline stations is a photographic inventory of the oxidized icons of a short-sighted society.
